Learn how early detection and simple lifestyle modifications can help combat Type 2 diabetes. Initiatives like Diabetes Free SC are actively working to reduce diabetes risk and complications across the state.

Type 2 diabetes can seem like a giant — stomping its way through our lives stealing good health, vision, feeling in hands and feet, energy, and even life itself from us and those we know. Your mother, your uncle or your cousin may have been diagnosed. Maybe your doctor told you your blood sugar is high, or you have pre-diabetes. While the effects of diabetes are serious, everyone can fight back with a one-two punch to stand up for themselves and take down diabetes.

Find out if you have or are at risk for diabetes. A diagnosis is the first step in controlling it. A simple A1C blood test identifies a risk and can put you on the path to resources to help you rise above it. When you can manage your blood sugar, you begin to knock down the damage of diabetes and take charge.

Take simple steps today to prevent diabetes. You can fight diabetes right now by doing the following:

  • Get up and move.
  • Add a piece of fruit or fresh vegetable to your next meal.
  • Drink a bottle of water instead of soda or juice.
  • Go for a walk with a friend.
  • Get a good night sleep.

These little changes add up in a big way to lower your risk. When you take a small step in the right direction, you stand up to diabetes for you and your family.
