BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is always looking for new talent to help us meet our business goals. As one of the largest employers in the state, we employ people in a variety of career areas.

Gibson Flock, a recruiter at BlueCross, shares tips for landing a job with us. Once you’ve prepared your resume and reviewed our recruiter’s tips, here are a few things to know about the hiring process here.

Job requirements are key

When looking at open positions on our website, pay attention to the qualifications section.  There is a section for what you need to qualify for the position. There is also a list of skills and experience that hiring managers prefer you have.

BlueCross requires potential new hires to meet the minimum qualifications. But Flock says if you have the preferred qualifications, it will make your application stand out.

There’s no wiggle room on qualifications

One of the biggest obstacles recruiters see is that people apply for jobs when they don’t meet the minimum qualifications. If a position says you must have at least two years of experience, you must have two years of experience to qualify. Jobs that require certain licenses expect applications to have the noted credentials.

Hiring takes time

It can vary how long it takes to fill an open position. But applicants should expect the process to take several weeks.

Applicants will be notified if they advance in the process.

Do you want the job?

Flock says a candidate’s enthusiasm can go a long way. He recommends presenting your best self when you interview or speak with a recruiter. Qualifications matter, of course. But so does being someone the hiring manager can picture on his or her team.

“With a large pool of qualified candidates, excitement can help move you further in an interview,” he says.

Follow up

If you have any questions about an interview time or requirements, follow up with the recruiter you are working with. Being organized is key to landing the job, Flock says. Don’t be afraid to reach out with any questions. It’s better to be prepared.

“You are not bothering us if you follow up to ask about interview times or to verify something,” he says. “Use your resources and don’t miss out on something.”

Reach out to a recruiter

Flock recommends contacting a recruiter directly if you are looking for a position but don’t see any openings that fit your background or interest. Jobs may have different titles or descriptions than you would find at other companies. But recruiters can help match you with a position that fits your skills.

We have opportunities in 11 of the 16 career clusters. This means no matter your background, you can find a future with BlueCross.

If you have any questions, you can contact a recruiter at Corporate.Recruiting@bcbssc.com. Flock recommends attaching your resume to the email so recruiters can assist you.
